Possible Causes of Infertility

Conception is a very delicate process that relies on the good reproductive health of both partners. The male partner must be able to produce enough healthy sperm to fertilize an egg, while the woman must regularly release an egg. To meet, both the man's sperm and the woman's egg must be able to travel through their respective reproductive tracts without any hindrance. Finally, the uterus must be able to provide a nourishing environment for the embryo to implant and thrive. There are a variety of circumstances that may impact upon this process, they include:

  • A female partner over the age of 35 (because men produce sperm throughout their adult lives, the age of the male is not as crucial)
  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Two or more miscarriages
  • Infections of the prostate gland
  • Prior use of an Intrauterine Device (IUD)
  • A history of sexually transmitted disease in either the man or the woman
  • A history of pelvic or genital infection in either partner
  • Reversal of vasectomy in the man
  • Reversal of tubal litigation in the woman
  • Previous abdominal surgery in either the man or the woman
  • Excessive acne or hirsutism
  • Endometriosis
  • Excessive Dysmenorrhea
  • Breast discharge associated with high prolactin
