IVF Cycle Monitoring

A look at how IVF cycle monitoring fits into the IVF process

One of the gold standards for infertility treatment is IVF, or in-vitro fertilization. The IVF process involves a series of tests, sonograms and procedures intended to result in a viable pregnancy. For patients who choose IVF, one of the critical aspects is IVF cycle monitoring by our Tulsa fertility center doctors.

How does the IVF process work?

To understand IVF cycle monitoring, it helps to look at the entire process. Having a full view of the IVF process will give context to where monitoring fits into the treatment.

Most IVF cycles take four to six weeks and involve multiple steps.

  • Controlled ovarian stimulation to produce multiple mature eggs
  • Assessment of egg development through blood tests and ultrasound monitoring
  • Surgical retrieval of the eggs once they mature
  • Fertilization of the eggs by sperm in the laboratory
  • Evaluation of the growing embryos
  • Transfer of a single embryo to the uterus
  • Additional monitoring after the transfer

What is the process for IVF cycle monitoring?

With IVF cycle monitoring, patients are monitored by blood work to check hormone levels, and by ultrasound to watch egg development before retrieval and embryo development after a positive pregnancy test. Generally, you will see the sonographer, your Tulsa fertility center doctors and your treatment coordinator throughout your IVF cycle. These appointments allow us to keep a close eye on your progress.

We typically schedule five to seven appointments over a two-week timeframe. Patients can contact us if any questions or concerns arise between visits. About nine to 10 days after the embryo transfer, you will return to the office for a pregnancy test. Scheduling the blood test any earlier may present inaccurate results.

Why is monitoring important?

We understand that the IVF process often feels like an exhausting marathon that may not have a successful finish. Through IVF cycle monitoring, our Tulsa fertility center doctors can watch our patients’ progress and ensure the best odds of success. There are several benefits of monitoring throughout the IVF cycle.

  • Enabling the doctor to measure critical hormone levels
  • Gathering valuable information about the current IVF cycle
  • Offering reassurance to patients during the waiting period
  • Providing an opportunity to catch any unusual developments
