Varicoceles

Treating varicoceles can address male infertility and improve the odds of conception

Approximately 1 in 8 couples faces infertility issues. Our dedicated team of Tulsa fertility specialists understands the frustration that our patients and their partners face when trying to conceive doesn’t result in pregnancy. At Tulsa Fertility Center, we combine clinical expertise and compassionate care to treat infertility and deliver successful outcomes for hopeful parents. In some cases, that means treating varicoceles, which are a common cause of male infertility.

Infertility by the numbers

Many couples who decide to pursue fertility testing are shocked to learn that male infertility is part of their problem. In fact, a male factor accounts for 30% to 40% of cases of infertility. Female infertility comprises another one-third. A combination of both types, and unexplained infertility, make up the remainder. No matter the reason, our Tulsa fertility specialists can provide comprehensive fertility treatment.

Common causes of male infertility

Just as with female infertility, male infertility can occur for a variety of reasons. Lifestyle issues, medical conditions, hormonal disorders and physical abnormalities can all contribute to infertility in men. We often see issues related to the following factors.

  • Abnormal sperm production
  • Poor sperm quality
  • Anatomical blockages or abnormalities, such as varicoceles
  • Genetic factors
  • Infections of the reproductive tract
  • Physical trauma to the area

What is a varicocele?

A varicocele is defined as an abnormally enlarged vein in the scrotum. While the word sounds unusual, the condition is not. Approximately 20% of adolescents and 10% of adult men have varicoceles; moreover, they are found in 40% of men diagnosed with infertility.

This condition is thought to affect sperm production and quality by increasing testicular temperature, causing oxidative stress that damages sperm cells, and contributing to hormonal imbalances. Most men with varicoceles go on to have children without any difficulty, but in some cases, treatment is needed to help men become fathers.

How do you treat varicoceles?

Before beginning treatment, your physician will complete a full fertility evaluation, which includes testing for both partners. A semen analysis is the first step in diagnosing male infertility. If this test reveals anything unusual, we will refer your partner to a urologist, a specialist in male reproduction, for further evaluation.

The treatment for this condition depends on the severity of the varicocele, discomfort levels, family planning goals and the female partner’s fertility situation. Your doctor will consult with the urologist to review the test results and recommendations. During a follow-up visit, we will create a customized treatment plan designed to enable you and your partner to welcome a baby into your lives.
