Making the best of it: Tips for egg retrieval day

When you undergo an IVF cycle, you may feel overwhelmed by the poking, prodding and testing that goes along with the process. Our Tulsa fertility doctors are here to support you through each step, including offering tips for egg retrieval day. We believe that understanding what to expect and planning for the IVF process can increase your odds of a positive outcome while protecting your peace of mind.
What is egg retrieval day?
An IVF cycle involves ovarian stimulation to facilitate the maturation of multiple eggs. During this time, we monitor your progress in our office with blood work and ultrasound. When the follicles reach the desired size, you will take a trigger shot and come in for the egg retrieval within 36 hours. The outpatient procedure is performed under IV sedation, and involves removing the eggs with a long, thin needle inserted through your vaginal wall.

- Wear loose clothes. It will make getting dressed after the procedure easier and will feel more comfortable if you experience any bloating.
- Plan accordingly. We recommend that you take the whole day off so that you can rest once you get home. Because of the anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you to and from the appointment. You can resume normal activities in 24 to 48 hours.
- Keep OTC pain meds on hand. Light cramping after the procedure is normal, so having acetaminophen or ibuprofen readily available will ease any discomfort.
- Contact our office about anything unusual. If you develop excessive pain, a fever or any difficulty eating or drinking, call our office right away.
- Watch for updates from our office. Make sure you have access to our patient portal and that you have provided your preferred contact information, so that we can reach you with important details about embryo development and next steps in your IVF cycle.
